Calendula: A Radiant Healer for Garden, Skin & Spirit
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is a radiant orange flower and beloved medicinal herb, known for its sunny presence and gentle yet powerful healing properties.
Easy to grow and endlessly generous, calendula brings warmth and brightness to any garden space. It’s sometimes called “the Bride of the Sun” because the flowers follow the rhythm of daylight, opening their petals with the morning sun and closing again in the evening or on overcast days. There’s something quietly comforting about a plant that moves in such intimate conversation with the sky.
Growing Calendula:
Calendula is a hardy annual that’s wonderfully approachable, even for beginner gardeners. You can start seeds indoors or direct sow them into your garden beds in early spring. They thrive in full sun but will tolerate a range of soil conditions, making them an easy companion in many gardens.
One of calendula’s most magical qualities is its abundance. The more you harvest, the more it blooms. With regular picking, you’ll be rewarded with continuous flowers throughout the summer and, in milder climates, even into winter. Here in Portland (Zone 8), I often enjoy calendula blooming nearly year-round.
Harvesting & Drying:
Pick flowers when they are fully open
Harvest frequently to encourage new blooms
Lay flowers in a single layer on a tray
Dry in a well-ventilated space away from direct sunlight
Or use a food dehydrator for quicker drying
Store fully dried flowers in a sealed glass jar
Calendula is also edible. The fresh petals can be sprinkled into salads or used to decorate cakes, adding little bursts of golden color.
Brief history & folklore:
Calendula has been in relationship with people for centuries across the many regions where it naturally grows, including Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and parts of West Asia such as Iran. Like many medicinal plants, its story isn’t singular. Each place and culture has shaped its own understanding of how calendula is used, prepared, and valued.
In Mediterranean and European traditions, calendula became a familiar presence in both the kitchen and the apothecary. Its petals were added to soups and stews, lending color and subtle bitterness, and it was used in simple remedies to support the skin and body. This culinary use is where the common name “pot marigold” originates, referring to the cooking pot rather than how the plant is grown.
In other regions where calendula is native, it has also been used in local foodways and traditional medicine, though these uses are less widely documented in Western herbal texts. What remains consistent is the plant’s role as a gentle, accessible ally, something that can be grown, gathered, and worked with in everyday life.
Calendula is sometimes confused with the marigolds (Tagetes) commonly used in garlands and ceremonies around the world. While they share a similar sunlit appearance, they are entirely different plants with distinct histories and traditional uses.
Across cultures, calendula is often associated with the sun, opening and closing with the rhythm of the day. Over time, it has come to symbolize warmth, resilience, and renewal, a small but steady presence that returns again and again.
Medicinal Uses:
Calendula is most widely known as a skin-healing herb and is commonly used in salves, oils, balms, and first-aid preparations.
It has a gentle yet effective affinity for:
Dry, cracked skin
Chapped lips
Minor cuts and scrapes
Red, inflamed or sensitive skin
In my own work, calendula is one of my closest plant allies. I infuse the dried flowers into oil using a slow, intentional process, creating a rich golden infusion that becomes the base for my small-batch lip balms. It brings a deeply soothing quality that you can feel immediately on the skin.
I also love incorporating calendula petals into my handcrafted candles, where they carry that same warmth and brightness into a different kind of ritual.
Beyond topical use, calendula can also be enjoyed as a tea, traditionally used to support digestion and ease stomach discomfort.
If you’d like to explore more of its medicinal depth, I recommend connecting with a local herbalist or diving into herbal texts. One detailed online resource is the HerbRally calendula monograph, which offers an in-depth look at its many applications.
Emotional & Energetic Support
Beyond its physical healing properties, calendula is also cherished by herbalists for its gentle support of emotional well-being.
There’s a warmth to this plant that feels almost palpable. Like a small sun, it carries a steady, life-giving energy that can help soften what feels heavy, guarded, or tender within us. Calendula is often associated with uplifting the mood, easing emotional heaviness, and bringing light into darker inner spaces.
It’s also considered a plant of connection, supporting openness, receptivity, and a greater ease in how we relate to ourselves and others. Where there has been hurt or contraction, calendula offers a quiet kind of repair, not forceful, but steady and reassuring.
“Calendula brings light to dark places. It renews and heals by connecting us to our joy and happiness. It also increases understanding and receptivity, and encourages warmth, sensitivity, and better communication.”
— Karen Rose, The Art & Practice of Spiritual Herbalism
