Candle Care & Burning Tips

Fire is a powerful element that should be tended and nurtured with caution. Always burn your candle within sight, on fire-safe surfaces that are level. Keep away from drafts, children, pets or anything flammable.

CANDLE BURNING TIPS

My number one tip is to always trim your wicks before EACH lighting! Trim a cotton wick to 1/4” and a wooden wick to 1/8”. You can use a fancy tool like a wick trimmer OR simply use your fingers to pinch off the excess (black) carbon left from your previous light. Trimming the wick ensures that your candle burns properly, with a steady, even flame. If the flame of your candle gets too big, too small, begins to flicker or act weird, gently blow it out and let cool for a few minutes. Then pinch the excess carbon from the wick using your fingers or a wick trimmer. Then if you wish, you can relight.

Burn your candle for 1-3 hours to allow the entire surface of the candle to become liquid. This will create an even burn memory in the wax and ensure the longest life of your candle. Once the melted wax has reached the edges, blow out the candle and let cool. It’s good practice to always burn your candle long enough for the entire surface to liquify, but especially during the first burn!

Do not burn your candle for longer than 4 hours at a time. Stop use when only 1/4” of wax remains. These two tips are for your safety. The tin will become very hot over time as the candle burns, and will need time to cool down. I have continued to burn my candles beyond the 1/4” of wax point with success, but only with close supervision. During the very end of a candle the flame can become more unpredictable, especially if you forget to trim your wick!

Once you’ve finished your candle, let it cool for a few minutes and wipe out the remaining wax with a paper towel. Remove the metal wick tab, wash and reuse the vessel or recycle.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:

  • If you have trouble lighting your wooden wick candle, try holding the vessel at a slight angle while lighting. Once you light a small corner of the wick, carefully set it down and allow the flame to grow across the entire wick.

  • Often times surfaces are not perfectly level, so its good practice to periodically rotate the vessel while the candle is burning.

  • If any of the decorative herbs ignite while lighting the candle or while burning. Gently blow out the flame, let cool and remove the debris. Then you can relight and enjoy!
