Why I’m updating some candle ingredients — a note on sustainability and clean fragrance

Hi — I want to share an important ingredient update for my candle line, and explain why the change matters.

Why I’m changing some candle ingredients I care deeply about creating beautiful, evocative scents while minimizing harm to the plants and ecosystems that give us those aromas. After researching the environmental impact of certain botanicals, I’ve decided to discontinue the use of patchouli and frankincense essential oils in my candle blends.

Two reasons drove this decision:

  • Candles require larger quantities of oils than small‑batch products like roll-ons or aura sprays. Using large amounts of certain essential oils can put pressure on fragile ecosystems.

  • Patchouli production has been linked to soil depletion and deforestation in parts of Indonesia. Frankincense trees in the Horn of Africa and Arabian Peninsula face increasing stress from overharvesting and climate change.

What I’m using instead:

To preserve the scent profiles you love while reducing environmental impact, certain candle blends now include high-quality, cleaner fragrance oils in place of patchouli or frankincense essential oils.

  • Frankincense: The frankincense fragrance oil I use is all‑natural and plant‑derived. It recreates the authentic frankincense aroma while helping reduce pressure on wild frankincense tree populations. This all‑natural frankincense is included in Stay Cozy and The Sun blends.

  • Patchouli: The patchouli fragrance oil I use is a CleanScents+ formula — non‑toxic and phthalate‑free — selected to deliver earthy, grounding patchouli character while meeting cleaner fragrance standards. This CleanScents+ patchouli fragrance oil is included in Inner Truth, Fairy Garden, and Witches Brew.

Which candles are affected The following candle blends now contain fragrance oil in addition to essential oils:

  • Stay Cozy — Sweet Orange, Ginger, Nutmeg, Cinnamon essential oils; frankincense (all‑natural fragrance oil)

  • The Sun — Sweet Orange, Rose Geranium, Lavender, Cinnamon essential oils; frankincense (all‑natural fragrance oil)

  • Inner Truth — Star Anise, Lavender, Cedarwood essential oils; Patchouli (CleanScents+ fragrance oil)

  • Fairy Garden — Lemongrass, Ylang Ylang, Litsea essential oils; Patchouli (CleanScents+ fragrance oil)

  • Witches Brew — Blood Orange, Palmarosa, Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Rose Geranium essential oils; Patchouli (CleanScents+ fragrance oil)

All other candles in the collection will continue to use essential oils only.

Aura Sprays and Plant Magic Perfumes:

For aura sprays and roll-ons I will continue to use pure essential oils (including patchouli and frankincense) because those products are made in small batches and use very small amounts of each oil. This lets us honor the aromatherapeutic benefits of these plants while keeping environmental impact low.

Transparency and Documentation:

I want you to shop with confidence. If you’d like, I can provide supplier documentation for any fragrance oil (SDS, COA, IFRA compliance). Below is the exact ingredient wording I’ll be using on product pages and labels for affected candles:

  • Example label wording (Stay Cozy): Sweet Orange, Ginger, Nutmeg, Cinnamon essential oils; frankincense — all‑natural fragrance oil; base: soy wax, cotton wick.

A short FAQ:

Q: Is the frankincense in your candles still natural?
A: Yes — the frankincense fragrance oil used in affected candle blends is all‑natural and plant‑derived.

Q: Are the fragrance oils safe?
A: Yes — the patchouli fragrance oil is a CleanScent+ formula (non‑toxic, phthalate‑free), and the frankincense blend is an all‑natural formulation. I can share SDS/COA/IFRA information on request.

Q: Will this change affect how the candles smell?
A: No — the fragrances were chosen to preserve the character and feeling of the original blends while using cleaner, more sustainable ingredient sources.
